Today's Lesson Focus is...
This week we will be doing STAAR review with a week with informational text. Today, you can begin by reintroducing genre, text features, main idea, supporting details and organizational patterns. You will want your students to do a 'brain drain' over everything they know about non-fiction. Do a quick 10 minute 'brain drain' before you begin reading the attached passage together.
There are a multitude of tools you can use for the 'brain drain' activity, including:
- Padlet Website Link Links to an external site. (You may need to clear your wall after class each time)
- Bubbl Links to an external site. (Mind Mapping Tool)
***Use Bubbl to create a mind map reviewing Non Fiction concepts such as genre, text features, main idea, supporting details, organizational patterns, etc.) Track concepts, definitions and how concepts relate to one another.
After reviewing non-fiction concepts with your students, read Five Rings Unbroken Passage.pdf Download Five Rings Unbroken Passage.pdf, casually noting features specific to non-fiction.
Next, complete the 5 W's + H Summary.
Finally, look at the summary question found in Five Rings Unbroken with students on the assignment Summarizing in Five Rings Unbroken.
RESPOND: Write an answer to the SCR question. Then, model revision by removing a word or sentence that doesn't fit. Have students complete this revision on their own responses.
CREATE: Students are writing an ECR to this Informational Text.
