Oil Pastel Practice

CLICK HERE Links to an external site. for our demonstration video of class as I breakdown each of the following techniques using oil pastels. Your finished practice should look like the below. Please file upload a picture of yours to complete this assignment. It is due Monday, October 26th. And in case people are having issues getting their oil pastels for supplies, the assignment is open until Friday, October 30th.

Break Up your sketchbook page according to the spaces and labels below: 

4 Rows - 

  • 1 Color
  • Blending 2 colors
  • Techniques 1
  • Techniques 2

Divide you top 2 rows into the following 5 column spaces - 10 total

  • Light Pressure
  • Heavy Pressure
  • Smudging with Finger
  • Smudging with a Paper Towel roll, Paper blender, or Tortillion
  • Solvent (Baby Oil or Nail Polish Remover)

Third Row "Techniques 1" 

  • Scraffitto - in one color & layering 2 colors
  • Craftsmanship - good strokes in similar directions vs. bad strokes in too many directions

Fourth Row "Techniques 2" 

  • Pointillism (dots or short strokes) with 3-4 colors 
  • Contour lines - draw an object with several colors but applying marks in the direction of the object contours
  • Create a Texture - layer multiple colors over each other to create a texture (grass, hair, bark, etc) but using more than one color layering for value and depth
